Development Types are no longer required in UrbanSim. You can use any
geography, and define as many building types as you wish to deal with.
Areas need not be rectangular cells, but could be polygons of any
shape. A buildings table can contain zero to many building records per
record in the unit of geography you choose to use (gridcell, parcel,
zone, etc.), thereby accommodating any mixed uses in your data. You
can look at the downloadable Eugene database for a simple example in
which the database has been modified from a gridcell structure to one
containing gridcells and buildings. The building_types table holds the
typology.
