I think most of the developers currently use some combination of
Eclipse/Pydev and WingIDE (www.wingware.com). Wing has a (relatively
inexpensive) commercial license, but grants free licenses for Open
Source project developers. No strong endorsements here. We use Eclipse
mainly for historical reasons since we used to develop principally in
Java, but also because it has built-in support for interfacing with a
CVS code repository, whereas Wing does not. Most users won't need a
heavyweight IDE, and can use the one that comes with Python, called
IDLE, or other lightweight options like drpython or SciTE.
